Hanover and Spring Grove have high mosquito populations. For the Daily Record/Sunday News Jul 12, 2007 Inspection and trapping by state officials found Hanover has a high population of house mosquitoes, which can transmit West Nile virus. The testing was performed recently by the Penn State Cooperative Extension and the state Department of Environmental Protection.
Thomas Smith, the York County West Nile virus program coordinator for the extension, has advised York County residents and visitors to take precautions to reduce their risk of West Nile virus infection. Those planning to be outside should remember to use insect repellent containing DEET - especially from dusk to dawn - and to wear long sleeves and light-colored clothing. Larvicide control techniques are being used to reduce mosquito larvae breeding populations throughout York County.
So far this year, West Nile virus has shown up in Pennsylvania only in Blair County, according to the DEP. The DEP offers tips to prevent offering mosquitos a place to breed: Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers that have collected on your property. Pay special attention to discarded tires.
Stagnant water in tires are where Hanover and Spring Grove have high mosquito populations.
