I think those guys are going to be great for us." Safety Dwight Smith said he's taking a wait-and-see attitude before making any judgments about the offense. "You can never tell," he said.
"Who thought Rex Grossman was good enough to be in the Super Bowl last season? We've got to wait and let time tell." Linebacker Chad Greenway said he has been impressed by what he has seen of the Vikings' young receivers on the practice field.
"I think everybody's pretty excited about what's been going on," he said. "They've been out here absolutely flying around, making catches, making great plays, blocking down the field. I think from what people said we needed to improve on, we've improved on.
Hopefully, we can carry that into Mankato." Heading into just his second season, Greenway's window of playoff opportunity isn't as narrow as those of Williams or Sharper, but he shares their belief that the Vikings have enough talent to make this a winning season. "You lose a couple close games and that's the difference between going 6-10 or 10-6, if you can reverse a couple of those losses. You just hope you can get that touchdown or hold them off in close situations, and you may end up 10-6 or 9-7 and get in the playoffs." Like his defensive teammates, Greenway said that's nothing against Winfield, who might have some issues with the organization but remains a popular and respected team leader.
"I'm in no position to comment on any of that stuff," Greenway said. "Antoine has his own opinions, and he's been around a long time. I'm sure he's doing everything he can to prepare himself for the season, and that's all you can ask of a guy like that who's been around and played at as high a caliber as he has.
