Authorities said Friday that the Osceola man shot by police Thursday in the town square was Eric "Max" Harold Lockwood, 40, who was shot by officer Richard Thomas after Lockwood fired a .357 Magnum handgun at Thomas as the officer emerged from his police car. Thomas, a three-year veteran of the Osceola police force, had responded to a 911 call shortly after 1 p.
m. Thursday after Lockwood reportedly fired his gun through a window at an apartment on Jackson Street in Osceola. Agent Kevin Winkler of the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation said a woman inside the apartment had recently ended at relationship with Lockwood, who was known in Osceola by the nickname "Max.
" Winkler said that when Thomas responded to the 911 call, Lockwood was located nearby on Jefferson Street. As Thomas was getting out of the car, Lockwood fired twice at the officer, one bullet striking the roof of the police car just above the driver's door. Winkler said the gun used by Lockwood was reported stolen to the Clarke County Sheriff's office about the time the 911 call was received Thursday.
Thomas retreated behind the car and from a crouch fired three shots at Lockwood, striking him twice. Lockwood later was pronounced dead. An autopsy is to be done today on Lockwood's body at the Stae medical Examiner's office in Ankeny.
Both Thomas and Sgt. Chuck Beeker, a 22 year veteran of the Osceola Police Department who arrived as backup and witnessed the shooting, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident.
