Colon has given up six runs or more in four of his past eight starts. The right-hander's issue is an inability to change speeds on his fastball. Santana's issues might be even deeper than Colon's.
Over his past four starts, the right-hander has a 9.90 ERA. "We need production from our rotation, no doubt about it," Scioscia said.
"Our confidence is still strong with Ervin, but the bottom line is we need production and that's something we'll look at. Ervin has the capabilities to get back to being a real force in a championship-caliber rotation." Resop's short stay: Chris Resop didn't last long in relief Sunday.
After giving up a three-run home run to the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez in the fourth inning, the right-hander had a 3-2 count on Hideki Matsui when he got a visit from trainer Rick Smith. Resop was removed from the game with right elbow irritation. He will be examined by team doctor Lewis Yocum today.
Future stars: The Angels had two participants in Sunday's Futures Game at AT T Park in San Francisco. The game, in conjunction with All-Star Game activities, pits a team of international prospects against a team of American-born prospects. Right-hander Rich Thompson from Australia and infielder Freddy Sandoval, born in Mexico, were on the World Team roster.
Thompson is 2-3 at Double-A Arkansas with a 2.01 ERA, while Sandoval is batting .292 with six home runs at Double-A.
Day off: After a sore finger caused Howie Kendrick to launch his bat into the stands twice in the past five games, he was given a day off Sunday. Also: Weaver will have a nine-day rest when he takes the mound Saturday ..
. The Angels have not hit a home run in their past seven games and have just five in their past 13 games. Colon has given up six runs or more in four of his past eight starts.
