Why is it that modern British actresses are approximately twice as likely to be nominated for an Oscar as British actors? They also win twice as often. I've just looked back over the past decade of the awards and British women have garnered 28 nominations out of a possible 100.

British men have managed a mere 14 (and no, I'm not counting Geoffrey Rush or Russell Crowe as British, nor the Irishman Peter O'Toole). There were 18 women nominated but only 10 men, and most went home without a bulge in their luggage. The women won four statues, the men only two, which may go to show how parochial the Academy voters really are.
