The result is "The Confessions of Rick James-Memoirs Of A Super Freak," by Rick James, which promises to be one of the most honest and unflinching looks at life in the fast lane ever written. With "Memoirs Of A Super Freak," James has written the ultimate tellall confessional with the emphasis on the "all." Alternately titillating and soul searching hair raising and heart breaking, "Memoirs Of A Super Freak" is everything a major celebrity memoir should be; a long look behind the tinsel curtain of fame into the private lives and closely guarded secrets of the glitterati: an unflinching bare-knuckled account of who did what to whom in bed, on stage, and between the legal lines.

The stars with walk-on parts in the Rick James story are on the A-list just, as the incidents and anecdotes he relates are on the blacklist. "Memoirs Of A Super Freak," in short, makes for some very juicy reading by a man who once called himself "the black Marquis de Sade." Despite James' remarkable musical talents and pioneering accomplishments, he was often better known for his extravagant lifestyle, excessive drug use, kinky sex-capades, and the brutal violence that eventually landed him behind bars.

But in his final years, James cleaned up his life and was intent on refocusing his legacy on his music. Interest remains strong in the larger than life persona who behind it all was merely searching for love. The film rights to "Memoirs Of A Super Freak" have been sold and writer Sheldon Turner ("The Longest Yard") is developing a script for the bio pic.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., James blended rock and funk, labeling his music "punk funk.

" His 1978 solo debut album, "Come Get It," spawned hits "You and I" and "Mary Jane." Perhaps James' definitive collection was "Street Songs, "which received multiple Grammy nominations and scored two No. 1 hits-"Give It To Me Baby" and "Super Freak.

" James discovered and nurtured artists such as Mary Jane Girls, Teena Marie and Eddie Murphy, and dueted with Marie and Smokey Robinson. Rappers have sampled his extensive library to mine new hits, none bigger than MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This." After drug and legal problems kept James in court and in jail the first half of the 1990s, he reemerged in 1997 with the critically-acclaimed "Urban Rapsody.

" Around the time comedian Dave Chappelle ushered James back to the forefront of popular culture on the Chappelle Show, James died of a heart-attack in August 2004. The original bad boy, who lived the "sex, drugs and funk soul" lifestyle, finished recording a new album Deeper Still prior to his 2004 death. The disc was released on his Stone City Records label May 15.
